Croatia, Montenegro and Bosnia & Herzegovina: 9 day itinerary
With so much to see and do along the Adriatic coast, planning a trip to Croatia and its surrounding areas can be challenging. On our last trip to the region, we wanted to combine visits to both beautiful, historic cities and stunning beaches, allowing time to explore as well as relax in the sun.
We decided to focus on two of Croatia’s most popular cities, Split and Dubrovnik, using them as bases to explore the surrounding areas. We also planned a day trip to Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina to visit two neighboring countries during our journey. Here’s the final itinerary we came up with for our 9-day visit:
Arrival in Split
Arrive in Split on your first day, a vibrant coastal city known for its rich history and stunning Adriatic views. After settling into your accommodation, take the rest of the day to relax and get acquainted with your surroundings.
Whether you're staying in the heart of the Old Town or near the waterfront, you'll be surrounded by the city's charming mix of ancient Roman architecture and modern Mediterranean vibes. Spend some time strolling along the Riva promenade, enjoying the local cafes, or simply unwinding before the exciting days ahead.
Day 1: Split & Diocletian's Palace
Beging your first full day in Split with a journey through history on a guided walking tour of the Old Town and Diocletian’s Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Starting at the Golden Gate, the grand northern entrance once used by Emperor Diocletian, you’ll step into a world where Roman architecture meets modern vibrancy. Marvel at the imposing statue of Gregory of Nin in nearby Giardin Park, a symbol of Croatian pride, and explore the Peristyle, the ceremonial square surrounded by majestic colonnades at the heart of the palace. Highlights include the Cathedral of Saint Domnius, one of the world’s oldest Catholic cathedrals still in its original structure, and the Temple of Jupiter, now a baptistery adorned with Roman artistry.
For lunch, head to the lively Riva promenade, where seaside cafes offer fresh Adriatic seafood with stunning views. In the afternoon, explore the atmospheric basement halls of Diocletian’s Palace, famed for their role in Game of Thrones, and wander through the charming Fruit and People’s Squares, known for their historic architecture and bustling energy. Conclude your day at Republic Square, enjoying dinner with a view of the harbour as the sun sets over this timeless city by the Adriatic.

Day 2: Trogir, Blue Lagoon & Necujam Bay
Embark on a scenic half-day boat tour from Split to Trogir, the Blue Lagoon, and Necujam Bay, a perfect blend of cultural exploration and coastal relaxation.
Begin with a short boat ride from Split to Trogir, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its well-preserved Venetian architecture and cobblestone streets. Stroll along the Trogir Promenade, lined with lively cafes and historic landmarks like the Monastery of Saint Dominic and the Cathedral of St. Lawrence, whose intricate Romanesque-Gothic design is a testament to centuries of artistry.
Next, speed across the sparkling Adriatic to the Blue Lagoon, a serene oasis nestled between Drvenik Veli and Drvenik Mali islands. Dive into the crystal-clear turquoise waters, perfect for swimming and snorkeling, or relax on its sun-drenched shores.
Conclude your day at Necujam Bay on the island of Šolta, a tranquil haven once favored by Emperor Diocletian. Swim in its calm waters or explore its picturesque beaches, soaking up the serene ambiance before returning to Split.

Day 3: Split to Korcula Island
Your third day begins with a leisurely morning in Split, giving you the perfect opportunity to unwind or revisit any attractions you may have missed on your first day. Whether it's wandering through the vibrant Green Market, ascending Marjan Hill for panoramic views, or exploring more of Diocletian’s Palace, the city offers plenty of options to suit your pace. If you’re craving more cultural discoveries, visit the Split City Museum, or take a stroll along the picturesque Riva promenade, soaking in the Adriatic charm.
As the afternoon unfolds, prepare for the next leg of your adventure. Board a late afternoon ferry bound for Korčula Island, a journey that allows you to enjoy stunning sea views as the sun dips toward the horizon. Renowned as the birthplace of Marco Polo, Korčula enchants with its medieval architecture, narrow cobblestone streets, and rich history.

Day 4: Korcula Island
Start your day by exploring Korčula Town, known as “Little Dubrovnik” for its medieval charm. Enter through the impressive Town Gate, a 15th-century monument, and wander the narrow, cobbled streets of the Old Town. Visit the stunning St. Mark’s Cathedral, a Gothic-Renaissance masterpiece, and make your way to Marco Polo’s House, the alleged birthplace of the famous explorer.
In the afternoon, relax at one of the island’s beaches. Banje Beach and Luka Korčulanska Beach are close to the town, while Vela Pržina and Pupnatska Luka offer peaceful, sandy shores perfect for a swim.
End your day by enjoying a meal at a local seaside café, savouring fresh seafood and local wines.

Day 5: Beach Day in Korcula & journey to Dubrovnik
Enjoy a wonderfully laid-back morning at the beautiful beaches in Korčula, taking in the gentle sounds of the waves and the warm sunshine before catching a late afternoon ferry to the stunning city of Dubrovnik.
Upon arrival in the early evening, take a moment to soak in the breathtaking views, then settle into your cozy accommodations, preparing for the exciting adventures that await you in the enchanting Pearl of the Adriatic the following day

Day 6: Dubrovnik Old Town
Spend your day discovering the history of Dubrovnik with an Old Town with a walking tour. Begin at the Pile Gate, the iconic 16th-century entrance to the city, which offers views of the harbor and nearby forts. Inside, explore the famous Stradun, Dubrovnik's main promenade, flanked by 17th-century buildings and bustling with activity.
Visit Onofrio’s Big Fountain, an engineering marvel from the 15th century, and the Church of St. Saviour, a Renaissance gem built after the 1520 earthquake. Continue your walk to the Church of St. Blaise, Dubrovnik's patron saint, and Orlando’s Column, a symbol of freedom.
Don’t miss the Rector’s Palace, a stunning blend of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles that once served as the political heart of the city-state. Nearby, the Assumption Cathedral showcases Baroque architecture and Titian’s famous painting.
Finish your day with the Jesuit Stairs, famously featured in Game of Thrones, before heading to the Old Port to enjoy the sunset, once a maritime hub of the Dubrovnik Republic that offers breathtaking views and a glimpse into the city’s seafaring past.

Day 7: Perast & Kotor Bay (Montenegro)
On this day, embark on a breathtaking day trip from Dubrovnik to Montenegro, visiting the picturesque towns of Perast and Kotor. The journey begins with a smooth drive from Dubrovnik to Perast, where you’ll be captivated by the town’s stunning Baroque architecture and scenic waterfront. After exploring the narrow streets and historic buildings, take a boat ride across the Bay of Kotor to the island of Our Lady of the Rocks, home to a beautiful church and fascinating history.
Next, continue to Kotor to explore the UNESCO-listed Old Town, with its medieval streets and impressive fortifications. Visit the magnificent St. Tryphon's Cathedral and walk along the ancient city walls. Conclude the day with a leisurely stroll through Kotor’s charming squares before returning to Dubrovnik.

Day 8: Mostar & Kravica Waterfalls (Bosnia & Herzegovina)
Embark on a scenic day trip from Dubrovnik to Mostar and the Kravica Waterfalls, exploring the rich history and stunning natural beauty of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Begin your journey with a drive through the picturesque coastal regions of Croatia and Bosnia, with a brief stop in Neum for a coffee break before heading toward the Kravica Waterfalls. Once you arrive, enjoy the breathtaking sight of the cascading falls, where you can take a walk to the base, embark on a boat tour, or simply relax by the tranquil turquoise lake.
Afterward, continue to Mostar, a city steeped in history and known for its iconic Old Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stroll through the charming cobbled streets, admire the Ottoman-era architecture, and visit landmarks like the Crooked Bridge, Nezir-aga Mosque, and Biscevic House, a stunning example of traditional Ottoman residential design. In the afternoon, savor Bosnian cuisine at a local restaurant and explore the bustling Old Bazaar before returning to Dubrovnik.

Day 9: Dubrovnik City Walls & Fort Lovrijenac
Dedicate your last day in Dubrovnik to exploring the iconic City Walls and surrounding fortifications to enjoy stunning views of the Old Town and the Adriatic Sea while gaining insights into the history and construction of the walls.
Explore the Franciscan Monastery, home to one of Europe's oldest pharmacies, and the Rector’s Palace, which now houses the Cultural History Museum. The palace’s blend of Gothic and Renaissance architecture offers an intriguing glimpse into the political history of the Dubrovnik Republic.
In the afternoon, visit Fort Lovrijenac, perched high above the sea, offering panoramic views and a fascinating look at Dubrovnik's defense against Venetian forces.

Day 10: Departure from Dubrovnik
It’s time to say goodbye to Dubrovnik and head home, reflecting on the unforgettable experiences of your trip. After a leisurely breakfast, take one last stroll through the cobbled streets of the Old Town or relax by the Adriatic, soaking in the views before making your way to the airport.
